After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Western nations imposed the most extensive sanctions and trade restrictions in history on Moscow. Today, Russia appears to be doing OK.Its economy is growing steadily. Russia can’t buy much from the West but has found new providers for drones, surveillance gear, computer chips and other gear. These nations make up more than half of the global economy, and they tried to weaponize their influence over trade and finance to weaken Russia. Absorbing the blowsThe measures against Russia go far beyond traditional sanctions, which historically have targeted banks and elites.

AdvertisementUkraine's most astonishing triumph came early, in April 2022, when it sank Russia's Black Sea flagship, the Moskva. "Ukraine has been extremely successful against the Black Sea Fleet, forcing Russia to relocate assets further away from Ukraine and the frontline," Germond told BI. CNN —Welcoming Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the White House this week for a state visit – the most elevated form of American diplomacy – will require President Joe Biden to make certain trade-offs. Yet Modi and India, the world’s largest democracy, also represent a lynchpin in Biden’s strategy in Asia. That, according to officials, was the rationale behind inviting Modi for a state visit, only the third of Biden’s presidency so far. The two leaders will hold a joint news conference – something virtually every state visit over the past two decades has featured – but that was only agreed upon after lengthy, delicate negotiations between the two sides. “We’re just grateful that Prime Minister Modi is going to be participating in a press event at the end of the visit.

“The quality of the Russian military in terms of advanced equipment will likely decline, at least over the near term,” the CSIS report says. Western officials, speaking during a briefing Tuesday, also noted the pressure on the Russian tank fleet. The CSIS report highlights the problem Russia faces in new tank construction, citing Russian media reports. ‘Less reliable suppliers’Sanctions have cut Russian access to optical systems – needed for tank gunners to pick out targets – ball bearings and machine tools, the CSIS report said. Russia still retains numerical advantages over Ukraine, the report said, because it has large inventories in reserve.
"Ukraine can still lose the war — but Russia can't win," Ian Bremmer told CNBC's Hadley Gamble at the Munich Leigh Vogel / Contributor / Getty ImagesUkraine can lose the war, but Russia cannot win at a geopolitical level, Ian Bremmer, political scientist and president of Eurasia Group, told CNBC. "Ukraine can lose this war," Bremmer told CNBC's Hadley Gamble at the Munich Security Conference on Friday, but Russia cannot win in NATO because of its "pariah" status, Bremmer said. That's a long-term question that goes beyond Ukraine," Bremmer added. Everyone here needs to understand that Ukraine can lose this war," Bremmer said. "[The war] is an existential crisis for Ukraine, it's an existential crisis for Zelenskyy and his family personally – they're fighting literally for their lives," Bremmer said.
Trying to bankrupt Russia could backfire

Reuters GraphicsIn the initial aftermath of the invasion, Western allies mostly issued threats to stop buying Russian oil and gas. Russia could push up the global price by carrying out threats to reduce its oil exports. But if the global price rose enough, Russia might still earn similar amounts at lower volumes. But the global gas price would rise, and Russia could direct the liquefied natural gas it currently sells to Europe to other regions. With Kyiv benefiting from military support and the gains from tighter sanctions uncertain, trying to bankrupt Russia is not worth the risk.
Well, as a matter of fact, yes, it could have been — even if all those things had actually happened. Call it negativity bias or affective asymmetry, but it is this: Relative to positive information, negative information carries more weight; moves us more strongly to act; and leads to greater learning — starting from infancy. According to this survival-based cognitive bias, we likely collectively succumbed to unwarranted negativity about the world in 2022 in at least three ways. This is a failure to accurately integrate positive and negative information by giving too much weight to the latter. Moreover, they are amplified because counterfactuals can be difficult to generate (i.e., it’s hard to remember the things that didn’t happen).
CNN —Brittney Griner is appealing her verdict in Russian court Tuesday, nearly three months after the US basketball star was convicted of smuggling drugs into the country and sentenced to nine years in prison. Griner’s appeal will be considered in the Moscow Regional Court in a hearing at which her attorneys are expected to argue the verdict was unfair and unjustified under Russian law, they told CNN. The court hearing the appeal can choose to leave Griner’s verdict in place, overrule it and send it back to the lower court, or reduce Griner’s prison term, they said. “Brittney is very strong person and has a champion’s character,” Blagovolina and Boykov told CNN in a written statement ahead of Griner’s appeal. “However, she of course has her highs and lows as she is severely stressed being separated from her loved ones for over eight months.”“She is very nervous waiting for the appeal hearing,” they added.
Reactions: Putin mobilises more troops for Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin makes an address on the conflict with Ukraine, in Moscow, Russia, in this still image taken from video released September 21, 2022. I think even with this Russia stuff it’s hard to see the market really rally a lot more from here ahead of the FOMC. From a geopolitical standpoint, Putin is frustrated that the war isn’t going his way and he’s threatening the west. "If it gets really, really bad, I'd expect the dollar to rise." This announcement by Putin to intensify the escalation in Ukraine definitely doesn’t help.
